The cheapest food packaging products around – Polystyrene/Styrofoam is a plastic made from petroleum – the same stuff you throw in your car – which is a non-sustainable, heavily polluting and diminishing resource.
When drinking and eating out of a polystyrene cup/food container, toxic chemicals like styrene and benzene leach into the food/liquid (especially when heated in a microwave). These toxins are known to affect the reproductive system and cause cancer.
After we have harmed our own health by using these products we then throw it away, further harming the environment. Only a very small amount of polystyrene food packaging products gets recycled. Polystyrene does not biodegrade but rather breaks into smaller fragments which will exist forever. These small pieces, when ingested by animals, clog their digestive systems.
